Testing was founded in 1979, after the pilot Thierry Sabine got lost in the desert and consider his experience worthy of being reproduced in a competition. What began as an adventure in its purest form, with little organization, has evolved into a major technology deployment, with more than two thousand people involved between organization, participants and attendees.
The layout of the race has changed over the years, both the beginning and the end, because of various reasons. Until 1994, the race was true to the original route, and Santa Maria del Paramo the beginning and the end Urdiales del Paramo. Just in 1994, and varied career, once in Dakar, returning back to Paris. Due to problems with the mayor of Paris, the end had to be changed, the Champs Elysees to Eurodisney. Thereafter, the starting point of the race has been switching between different European cities such as Granada, Marseille, Barcelona and Lisbon.

The path on the African continent also has been modified many times by political problems, sometimes resulting from guerrilla actions and civil wars. In 2008, the competition was suspended completely because of terrorist threats to the rally in Mauritania. As a result of the incident, the organization decided that the next edition would be disputed in South America, passing through sectors within Argentina and Chile, starting and ending in Buenos Aires. In this tour through a wide variety of terrain, including pampas, Argentina’s Patagonia or the Atacama Desert in Chile.
Also, the suspension of the test, leading to the advancement of the inaugural Central Europe Rally, the first certification test under the Dakar Series.
