Is a difference in training techniques the difference between an elite and an average football team? Can a stellar coach really change the success of a squad? It was upon similar questions that the Nivea chose to launch The Great Football Experiment, opening up the opportunity for one “average” Sunday football team to be trained by world class experts, such as Terry Venables and Ray Clemence. After over 600 amateur teams applied for this incredible opportunity, Ivory FC was chosen as the lucky squad. Currently, this team of Essex lads is being transformed into a potentially formidable force, and others interested in The Great Football Experiment can follow the experiment through a series of web episodes hosted by Nivea, the sponsor of the entire program.
The first of this series of episodes introduces members of Ivory FC and features clips from matches played by the team prior to the training. As any first episode should, this episode highly focuses on entertaining character snapshots of the players, provided through footage such as the moment when the team was first informed of their prize packet and celebratory cheering ensued. It also briefly features clips of the physical training that Ivory receives as part of the experiment, showing players cheerfully working through football exercises and laughing as a team. The purpose of the entire experiment is highly stressed in this initial episode as “offering players with the experience of a lifetime,” and the team’s readiness to embrace the challenges ahead of them is made evident in this start to the series.
Following episodes occur over the next several months, featuring the football team as they bond during some nights of partying and struggle through some of the physical challenges together. The most current episode of The Great Football Experiment (episode eight) finds Ivory FC’s players at football boot camp, focused on increasing the physical stamina and determination of the team.
Currently The Great Football Experiment is in its final stage, with Ivory FC’s training session just about over. While it appears that all the training is largely paying off, the team still has a bit of training left to do and subsequent competitions to dominate.
